Truck drivers have a difficult job regardless of the season, but when temperatures drop, conditions can get dangerous in a hurry. Driving in snowy and icy weather can present a considerable hazard for truckers. Still, with the proper education and preparation, you can get behind the wheel confidently, no matter what the winter weather throws at you.

Winter Challenges for Truck Drivers

The biggest challenge truck drivers face in the winter is the ever-changing weather. A light snowfall can become a blizzard at a moment’s notice, and drivers must be prepared for any situation. It’s essential to be equipped with the right gear and knowledge to protect yourself and care for your vehicle and your load in any weather.

Truck drivers also have to deal with potential route changes during the winter. If a route is blocked because of ice or fallen branches, you’ll need to be prepared to find another way to your destination while staying safe and confidently operating your truck. Staying calm and flexible in these situations is critical to a successful delivery.

Luckily, these winter challenges can be remedied with the proper technology, training, and preparation.

Technological Advancements

New technology is constantly emerging to make driving safer and easier for truckers. Advanced driver assistance systems, emergency braking capabilities, and stability control systems can help drivers stay safe in harsh conditions and reduce the risk of dangerous accidents. Ensure you’re fully educated about your truck’s assistance features before you hit the road.

Training and Skills Development

Whether you’ve been in the industry for decades or you’re in your first truck driving job, training for the winter months is critical. You should always be aware of the best safety practices for driving in harsh conditions and dealing with vehicle repairs on the road. It’s also important to know how to keep yourself safe in bad weather, including preparing and using an emergency kit.

Regulatory Compliance and Industry Standards

The trucking industry has strict standards and regulations regarding driver safety in harsh weather. Stay updated on best practices and guidelines from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as the winter months approach. Not only will you be better prepared on the road, but you’ll avoid hefty penalties associated with noncompliance.

Preparation Checklist

Before you hit the road, create a preparation checklist with everything you need for a successful winter trip. You can create a checklist for yourself, such as food, warm clothes, tools, a flashlight, and a phone charger. Make a vehicle checklist with steps to prepare for a long winter drive, such as checking your tires, testing the heating system, and stocking supplies like a tow rope and extra wiper blades.

At Source One, we’re dedicated to driver safety and customer satisfaction in any season. Contact us today to learn more about starting your trucking career with Source One!

Driven by his commitment to serve his country, Source One driver Tony Simmons enlisted in the military in 1989, serving honorably until 1993. His military experience instilled in him invaluable qualities like responsibility, discipline, and leadership, which continue to shape his life today. This Veterans Day, we are privileged to have Tony share with us a glimpse into his daily routine.

Morning Routine

How do you typically start your day before hitting the road? Are there any specific routines you follow?

Before I leave for work, I always pray to make sure I have a safe day. I try to get in a little early to unwind and clear my head.

Pre-Trip Inspection

Describe the steps you take for your pre-trip vehicle inspection. How often do you find issues that need addressing?

Typically, I do a pre-trip inspection and make sure I have all the proper accessories I need to get my job done and ensure no product is on the trailer.

Route Planning

How do you decide on the best route for your deliveries? Do you use any specific tools or apps?

I use Google Maps if I go to a store I have never been to before, and I plan my trip before departing

On the Road

What do you typically listen to while driving (e.g., radio, podcasts, music, audiobooks)?

I listen to country music, it keeps me relaxed, and some R&B music.

Have you had any memorable encounters or experiences on the road that stood out?

Sometimes, I have civilians come up to me and ask questions about the job, and I like it when people show an interest in what I do.

Meal and Rest Breaks

How often do you take breaks during your trips? What do you typically eat, and where do you prefer to stop for meals?

I usually bring my own snacks, typically beef jerky or candy. I will maybe have a soda, but I don’t eat a lot on shift, so I don’t get sluggish. When I do my delivery and unload, I consider that my break.

Interaction with Others

How often do you communicate with other truck drivers, dispatchers, or customers during your trips? What modes of communication do you use?

I usually communicate with other truck drivers when waiting at refineries. I’ll communicate with dispatch when I have issues with allocations or at a stop. I communicate via tablet or cell phone.

End-of-Day Routine

What steps do you follow when you finish your driving for the day? How do you unwind or relax after a long drive?

I complete a post-trip when I get back and do my paperwork at the end of my shift. I’ll sit in my car for a bit after I punch out to unwind and call it a day.

Physical and Mental Well-being

Driving for extended periods can be demanding both physically and mentally. How do you maintain your health and well-being on the road?

I try to eat healthy.

Reflections on the Job

What do you love most about being a truck driver? Are there any challenges or aspects of the job you wish were different?

I enjoy the fuel industry and what I do. One of the challenges is that the transportation industry is always changing, and you have to adjust to it.

Navigating the vast landscape of truck driving careers can be a challenging endeavor, with myriad factors influencing one’s decision. When exploring truck driving companies to work for, the structure of the company plays a pivotal role. In this regard, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) emerge as a lucrative option for truck drivers seeking fulfilling and rewarding career paths.

What is an ESOP?

An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is a retirement plan that allows employees to become beneficial owners of the company they work for. ESOPs offer a unique structure, enabling employees, including truck drivers, to have a stake in the company’s equity, leading to various advantages, both financial and non-financial.

Benefits of Working for an ESOP Company

Enhanced Job Satisfaction

In an ESOP, as employee owners you have a share in the company’s ownership, there is a collective drive towards the company’s success, fostering a sense of belonging and commitment. This elevated sense of responsibility and shared goals leads to enhanced job satisfaction for truck drivers, translating to a more positive work environment.

Financial Rewards

One of the prime benefits of working for an ESOP is the financial gain. As the company prospers, so do its employee-owners. Truck drivers in ESOP companies stand to benefit from the company’s financial growth, receiving an increased share value which can significantly contribute to their financial stability and retirement savings.

Employee Empowerment

ESOPs empower employees by involving them in some of the decision-making processes, allowing their voices and opinions to be heard. This level of inclusion fosters a collaborative environment where truck drivers feel valued and motivated, leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction.

Career Stability and Growth

ESOPs tend to have lower employee turnover rates and offer more stable and secure truck driving careers. The shared ownership model encourages mutual growth, enabling truck drivers to benefit from career development opportunities and a clear advancement pathway within the company.

The Competitive Edge of ESOPs in the Trucking Industry

For truck drivers seeking rewarding truck driving careers, ESOPs provide a competitive edge over other company structures. The sense of ownership and the alignment of individual success with the company success can create a synergized working environment where the company’s achievements translate to personal gains for the drivers. This enhanced job satisfaction and financial stability make ESOPs one of the most appealing truck driving companies to work for.

Where do you go from here?

Choosing the right company is crucial in shaping one’s career in truck driving. Employee Stock Ownership Plans, with their unique structure and myriad benefits, emerge as a beacon for those navigating the trucking landscape. They offer a harmonious blend of financial rewards, job satisfaction, employee empowerment, and career stability, making them a prime choice for truck drivers seeking fulfilling and prosperous careers.

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often take for granted the goods that seamlessly find their way onto our store shelves and into our homes. What we might not realize is that a considerable chunk of this movement is thanks to the unsung heroes of the road – truck drivers. As we celebrate Truck Driver Appreciation Week, it’s time to shed light on the crucial role these individuals play in fuel transportation and the economy at large.

The Backbone of the Economy

Truck Drivers: Keeping the Wheels Turning

Truck drivers are the gears that keep the economic machine in motion. They transport goods that range from consumer products to raw materials, ensuring that supplies reach where they’re needed most. But it’s the fuel transportation trucking sector that truly stands out. These drivers are responsible for delivering the lifeblood of our modern world – fuel. Gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel – you name it, they deliver it. Without them, our gas tanks would run dry, factories would grind to a halt, and planes would be grounded.

Connecting the Dots

It’s easy to overlook the intricate web of logistics that enables our society to function seamlessly. The fuel transportation trucking industry links oil refineries with gas stations, airports with fuel depots, and power plants with fuel sources. Truck drivers navigate through ever-changing road conditions, weather challenges, and even global events, all to make sure the fuel supply chain remains unbroken.

The Grit and Guts of the Job

Life on the Road: A Unique Lifestyle

The life of a truck driver is not for the faint of heart. Long hours spent on the road, nights away from home, and the solitude of the cabin become their daily companions. These drivers endure relentless schedules, adapting to time-sensitive deliveries and unpredictable circumstances. It takes a unique blend of perseverance and mental fortitude to thrive in this demanding profession.

Unsung Heroes

Truck drivers often go unnoticed as they navigate their massive vehicles through crowded highways and quiet country roads. Yet, their contributions resonate deeply throughout the economy. They endure the challenges of traffic jams, adverse weather conditions, and tight deadlines, all while maintaining a steady hand on the wheel.

Fueling the Economy

Economic Impact

The connection between fuel transportation and the economy is direct and profound. Industries across the board depend on a steady supply of fuel to function. Agriculture relies on fuel for machinery, manufacturing needs it to power factories, and the transportation sector itself hinges on a constant flow of fuel to keep trucks, trains, ships, and planes on the move. In short, without the dedication of truck drivers in the fuel transportation sector, economic growth would be stymied.

Job Creation and Community Support

Truck driving isn’t just a job – it’s a lifeline for communities. Many areas heavily depend on the trucking industry for employment opportunities. Truck Driver Appreciation Week isn’t just about recognizing individuals; it’s about acknowledging the stability and prosperity they bring to communities nationwide.

As we take a moment to reflect on the invaluable contributions of truck drivers during this Truck Driver Appreciation Week, let’s remember that they are more than just drivers. They are the gears turning the wheels of our economy, ensuring that the flow of goods and resources never falters. With their grit, guts, and unyielding determination, they deserve our respect and gratitude not just for a week, but year-round. So, next time you see a big rig cruising down the highway, give a nod to the individual behind the wheel – an unsung hero of modern life.

Being a truck driver can be incredibly rewarding, but just as with any other career, the job can be stressful. Whether you’re on or off the road, it’s crucial to take care of your mental health so you can perform your best and get the most satisfaction possible from your job. Here, we’ve got four simple tips to help take care of mental health for truck drivers.

1. Listen to Something Engaging

When you’re on the road, you might opt to play local radio stations or listen to some background music to keep your mind occupied. If you find that the same tunes are getting old, try listening to an audiobook or a podcast. You can keep your mind engaged while staying focused on the road ahead. You don’t have to listen to a lecture or a nonfiction book to see the benefits; diving into a fantasy novel or tuning into a comedy podcast can boost your brain power and lift your spirits. It’s a great way to help handle stress and improving your mental state.

2. Take Sleep Seriously

It’s all too easy to neglect sleep, but as a truck driver, sleep is one of the most critical elements of your performance. When you don’t get enough sleep, your reaction time is slowed, leaving you vulnerable to making mistakes on the road and getting yourself and other drivers into danger. Prioritize getting a minimum of eight hours of sleep each night. If you’re finding it difficult to fall asleep, you may want to talk to a doctor about potential solutions. Sleep deprivation can start to lead to other mental health issues.

3. Don’t Forget to Move!

When your main job duty is driving, you’re left sitting down for the majority of every shift, so it’s important to keep your body moving when you get the opportunity. Not only will you feel better physically, but you’ll feel less stressed when you get your heart pumping. When you’re not driving, try to stick to a regular exercise schedule, even if it’s just once or twice per week. On the road, get out and stretch regularly and walk as much as you can. Physical health is just as important and your mental well being.

4. Find Someone to Talk To

Truck driving can be a lonely career path. If you’re feeling particularly down, find someone to talk to. A quick call to a friend or family member to catch up on their lives can instantly bring you out of a bad mood. If you notice yourself becoming sad or irritable more often than normal, speak with a doctor or mental health professional. Finally, don’t be afraid to express your concerns to other drivers or your supervisor. There’s a good chance that they’ve been in a similar situation and can offer tips or, at the very least, sympathize with how you’re feeling. Building a community you can talk to is key to good mental health for truck drivers.

Driving in rough winds can be difficult in your car, but wind can become a severe hazard when you’re behind the wheel of a truck. To keep yourself safe on your journey and ensure you and your load make it to your destination, it’s crucial to know how to handle windy driving conditions on the road.

Top Tips for Driving in the Wind

To safely and successfully drive in the wind, you should start planning before you even start your trip. To safely and successfully drive in the wind, you should start planning before you even start your trip. You likely already check the weather conditions before heading out on the road, but be sure to pay attention to wind speeds as well.Knowing the conditions before you’re on the road will ensure you’re not caught by surprise.

If you can’t avoid traveling in the wind (either because of time constraints or because there isn’t another route to your destination), drive carefully and slowly. Consider what you would do in the case of heavy rain or snow. Turn your flashers on and stay vigilant at all times. Grip the steering wheel firmly and stick close to the shoulder of the road.

Sometimes, winds can simply become too dangerous to drive in. Whether you’re a new truck driver or you’ve been on the road for decades, don’t be afraid to stop if you’re worried about the weather. Wait out the heavy wind at a rest area or truck stop. If you can, park your trailer facing the wind (this strategy can reduce the potential of your trailer flipping). Windy driving conditions are no joke, and you want to make sure you arrive to your destination safely.

If you are new to the trucking industry, we have a few things for you to consider when getting ready to hit the road.

Reliable GPS Navigation System

A reliable GPS navigation system is an absolute must-have for every truck driver. It helps you navigate unfamiliar routes and find the most efficient paths. It ensures you adhere to specific trucking regulations such as weight restrictions, low clearance areas, and truck-friendly routes.

Invest in a GPS device specifically designed for truckers, with features like real-time traffic updates, weather alerts, and points of interest tailored to the trucking industry. This will be essential truck driving equipment to own.

Quality CB Radio

Communication is vital in the trucking industry, and a quality CB (Citizens Band) radio is essential for staying connected with other drivers and obtaining necessary information on the road.

CB radios allow you to communicate with fellow truckers regarding road conditions, accidents, and potential hazards. They also provide a sense of camaraderie among truck drivers and can be a great source of support during long hauls.

Comfortable and Supportive Seating

Spending long hours behind the wheel can take a toll on your body. A comfortable and supportive truck seat is crucial for your well-being and long-term health. Look for seat cushions that offer adjustable lumbar support, cushioning, and ergonomic design to minimize fatigue and promote good posture. A comfortable driver is a focused and safe driver.

Adequate Storage Solutions

Effective organization and storage are a must for a distraction-free and efficient workspace. Storage solutions such as overhead compartments, under-seat storage boxes, and truck cab organizers keep your belongings, paperwork, and essential tools easily accessible and secure during your journey.

Roadside Emergency Kit

A well-stocked roadside emergency kit is non-negotiable!

Unexpected situations can arise on the road, so being prepared is imperative. A truck-driving roadside emergency kit is essential for handling unforeseen problems.

Ensure your kit includes items such as reflective triangles, flares, first aid supplies, a fire extinguisher, a flashlight, extra batteries, jumper cables, blankets, hand warmers, tire pressure gauge, tire tread gauge, multi tool, and essential tools.

Regularly check and replenish the contents of your emergency kit to maintain its effectiveness.

Efficient Truck Maintenance Tools

The ability to perform basic maintenance tasks on your truck on the go can save you time, money, and hassle. Carry a toolkit with essential tools like wrenches, pliers, a tire pressure gauge, electrical tape, and spare fuses. Familiarize yourself with your truck’s maintenance requirements and perform routine inspections to ensure optimal performance.

Weather-Appropriate Clothing and Personal Items

You are exposed to varying weather conditions as a truck driver throughout your travels. Pack a range of weather-appropriate clothing items, such as waterproof jackets, warm layers, and sturdy footwear. Check out weather apps like Weather.com or Accuweather to ensure you are stocked for all potential conditions in your driving area.

Adequate Food and Water Supplies

Eating well on the road can be challenging, but it’s crucial for your overall health, from energy to focus. Fortunately, there are many more convenient healthy options for truckers.

Start by packing a cooler or investing in a portable fridge to store perishable food items. Stock up on fruits and veggies that provide sustained energy. Have a few filling snacks when you can’t stop and have a meal. Things like nutrition bars, packs of nuts, and even string cheese can knock off the edge, making you less likely to overindulge when you finally have time to eat.

Staying hydrated is equally important, so keep an ample supply of water or other hydrating beverages readily available.

Safety Equipment for Personal Protection

Prioritizing your safety is paramount when working as a truck driver. Always carry safety equipment such as reflective vests, hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses. These items will protect you in the event of an accident or roadside emergency and ensure you are visible to other people on the road. These are especially important during night operations or bad weather conditions.

Documentation and Legal Paperwork

To avoid any legal complications, carrying all the necessary documentation and paperwork is crucial. This includes your driver’s license, medical certification, truck registration, insurance documents, permits, and any other paperwork required by regulatory authorities. Keep these documents organized and readily available for quick reference when needed.

Remember, the key to a successful truck driving journey lies in preparedness, safety, and comfort. By equipping yourself with these essential truck-driving equipment items, you’ll not only enhance your driving experience but also ensure a smooth and efficient journey on the road. Stay safe, stay prepared, and enjoy the thrill of the open highway!

Fuel transport trucks are an essential part of our economy. With them, gasoline and diesel fuel reach gas stations and your tanks. Safety in the trucking industry is critical to keeping fleets and trucks moving. Source One Transportation ensures our drivers, customers, and the general public are always safe. Safety is not an option but a fundamental aspect of our business that we take seriously.

The Importance of Safety in the Trucking Industry

The sheer size and weight of fuel transport trucks make them a potential road hazard. The consequences of an accident can be devastating, resulting in property damage, financial loss, and sometimes loss of life.

The trucking industry is highly regulated, with mandatory safety regulations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has established rules and regulations that trucking companies must adhere to. Those rules include hours-of-service regulations, vehicle maintenance requirements, and driver qualification standards. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in severe penalties and legal action.

The Role of Drivers in Ensuring Safety

Source One transport and tank wagon drivers are critical in ensuring road safety. They are responsible for operating large vehicles in various weather conditions. Drivers must be well-trained, experienced, and knowledgeable about safety rules and regulations.

Source One invests in ongoing training for our drivers through Smith Systems. This is the same program utilized by over half of Fortune 500 fleets such as ExxonMobil, and FedEx. We offer additional training programs, including OSHA 10 and Safeland.

The Importance of Vehicle Maintenance

Vehicle maintenance is a crucial aspect of safety in the trucking industry. Trucks that are not well-maintained are more likely to experience mechanical failures, which can lead to accidents. Regular maintenance, including inspections, repairs, and servicing, is essential to ensure that vehicles are in good condition and can operate safely.

Source One replaces fuel transport trucks every five years. By refreshing our fleet regularly, we can minimize the risk of breakdowns and other issues that can negatively impact our customers’ experience.

The Four-Tiered Approach To Safety

Safety is job one! We are committed to ensuring our drivers, customers, and the public are always safe.

At the highest level, our Executive Safety Committee develops the most effective safety and security protocols for the entire Company. The Safety Committees decide on the best ways to implement those protocols and address any safety concerns that may arise.

‘Safety Champions’ are responsible for returning the safety information to their teams and acting as advocates and representatives between the safety committees and the rest of the team. This process ensures safety practices are disseminated and implemented throughout the Company, down to every employee at Source One.

Here at Source One Transportation, we are proud to say, ‘we employ many different drivers from many diverse backgrounds.’ This month we are celebrating women in trucking, and our female drivers who bring an energetic attitude and irreplaceable expertise to their roles. Source One Transportation is grateful to have these inspiring ladies on our team.

Renee Burney

Transport Driver, Source One Transportation

Renee has been with Source One Transportation since September 2022. This is her first job driving a transport. When choosing a career path, Renee knew she wanted to get her CDL. She originally started her career as a school bus driver. She then later decided to get her class A CDL license, and once she graduated, she was offered a position at our Youngstown location. Like Briana, Renee is also a fuel hauler and relies on the support of her peers to help her navigate her new position. She is the mother of two girls, a 10-year-old and a two-year-old that she enjoys spending time with. She also enjoys reading and focusing on ways she can further herself and continue to grow as a person.

Michele Nichols

Tank Wagon Driver, Source One Transportation

Michele recently started at Source One Transportation following a dramatic career change. Michele used to work as a loan officer and was a top performer at her job, but her dream was to become an over-the-road truck driver. With personal priorities changing things, she decided to join Source One Transportation, taking a job where she could be home every night.

After going back to school and breaking into the trucking industry, Source One Transportation reached out and brought her onboard as a tank wagon driver. As someone who wanted to see the country, she appreciates the views when delivering to the oil wells. Her job requires her to drive in some challenging, locations to and from frac sites, however she finds the work incredibly rewarding.

3 Things to Keep in Your Cab

If you work in the trucking industry, you know the importance of being prepared. You never know what can happen when you’re on the road, but when you plan ahead, you’ll be ready for whatever the day throws your way. When you’re getting ready for your next drive, make sure you’ve got these three things as part of your truck driver gear checklist.

Basic Hand Tools

Having a set of basic tools can save you a ton of hassle if you run into a problem on the road. If you’ve done proper maintenance or safety checks on your truck before you head out for your job, you hopefully won’t have to make too many impromptu repairs. Still, it’s nice to have some simple tools like a screwdriver, wrench, etc.

Disinfectant Wipes

Disinfectant wipes can come in handy in countless situations on the road. Use them to clean the dirt and dust off your dashboard, wipe up spills from lunch, or even clean your hands in a pinch. To go the extra mile, you can invest in other simple cleaning supplies like paper towels and trash bags.

First Aid Kit

Never underestimate the importance of a first aid kit. If you get a cut while fixing your truck or you feel a headache coming on, you’ll appreciate having everything you need right there with you. Your first aid kit should have essential items like Band-Aids, pain relievers, antibiotic ointment, gauze pads, and antiseptic wipes.

These are just a few things that can make life on the road a little easier. As you drive more, though, you’ll begin to figure out what items are essential for you to keep in your cab. Ask your fellow drivers for their recommendations, too!

Source One is proud to employ an incredible team of drivers throughout the Northeast, and we hope you’ll be next! Contact us today to learn more about our truck driving jobs and how to apply.
